Capacity in litres
A fridge runs all day for ten years or more, so buy for the family you will have, not just today. As a guide: 180–250 litres for 1–3 people, 250–350 litres for 3–5 people, and 350 litres or more for larger families or if you store a lot of vegetables, milk and leftovers.
Direct cool or frost-free
Single-door direct-cool fridges are affordable and use little electricity, but ice builds up in the freezer and you have to defrost them by hand. Frost-free double-door fridges defrost automatically, keep a larger, separate freezer and spread cold air more evenly. For most families buying above about 250 litres, frost-free is worth it.
Side-by-side and French-door models give lots of space but need a wide kitchen and use more power – measure the space and the door swing first.
Inverter compressor and star rating
An inverter compressor runs at varying speeds, so it uses less electricity, is quieter and handles voltage changes better. Many inverter fridges also work without a stabiliser across a wide voltage range – check the stated range against your area's supply.
Because a fridge never switches off, the BEE star rating directly affects your bill. Compare the yearly units (kWh) on the label; a difference of 100 units a year adds up over a decade.
Features worth paying for
Toughened glass shelves, a large vegetable crisper with humidity control, a convertible zone (turning the freezer into extra fridge space) and a base drawer are genuinely useful in Indian kitchens. Power-cut backup claims ("keeps cool for hours") are helpful in areas with frequent outages. Water dispensers and smart features add cost and more things that can break.
Warranty and placement
Most brands give a short product warranty and a much longer compressor warranty – note both. Leave a few inches of space behind and on the sides for air flow, and keep the fridge away from the stove and direct sunlight; it will cool better and last longer.
Quick checklist
- Litres by family size – buy for the next ten years
- Frost-free above ~250 litres
- Inverter compressor and a wide stabiliser-free voltage range
- Compare yearly kWh on the star label
- Measure the kitchen space and door swing
- Note the compressor warranty
