Smart TV buying guide: size, panel and sound for Indian homes
How big a TV your room needs, whether 4K and QLED are worth it, which smart platform to pick, and the hidden costs (sound, wall mount, installation) to plan for.

Pick the size from your seating distance
Measure how far your sofa is from where the TV will go. For a 4K TV, a comfortable rule is a screen diagonal of roughly two-thirds of that distance. At about 6 feet, a 43-inch TV works well; at 7–8 feet, 50 or 55 inches; at 9–10 feet, 55 to 65 inches. For a small bedroom, a 32-inch HD or a 43-inch Full HD/4K set is usually enough.
Most people who upgrade say they wish they had gone one size bigger, but do not stretch the budget for size alone if it means a much worse panel.
Resolution and panel type
At 43 inches and above, choose 4K (Ultra HD). Below 40 inches, 4K makes little visible difference. Panel types in order of price: regular LED, QLED (more vivid colours and usually brighter), Mini-LED (much better contrast and brightness) and OLED (perfect blacks, best for dark rooms and films).
Brightness matters in bright Indian living rooms with daylight. Read reviews that mention watching in the afternoon – a dim panel looks washed out in a sunny room no matter how good the specs sound.
The smart platform and remote
Google TV / Android TV, webOS (LG), Tizen (Samsung) and Fire TV all run the major Indian apps such as YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar and SonyLIV. What differs is speed and updates. Budget TVs with 1.5 GB of RAM often become slow after a year; 2 GB or more is noticeably smoother. A cheap streaming stick can always fix a slow TV later.
Gaming and ports
If you own a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, look for HDMI 2.1 ports, a 120 Hz panel and ALLM (auto low-latency mode). Everyone should check for at least three HDMI ports, one with eARC/ARC for a soundbar, and USB ports for a pen drive.
Sound and the costs after purchase
Thin TVs have small speakers, and the "40 W" on a listing does not tell you how clear dialogue will sound. Many buyers add a soundbar within a few months, so keep some budget for one. Check whether the wall mount and installation are free with the brand – in India they often are, but some brands charge separately for the bracket. Finally, check the panel warranty: some brands give a longer warranty on the panel than on the TV itself.
Quick checklist
- Measure the seating distance first
- 4K for 43 inches and above
- A bright panel if the room gets daylight
- 2 GB RAM or more for a smooth smart platform
- HDMI 2.1 and 120 Hz only if you game on a console
- Ask about free wall mount, installation and panel warranty
