Fully automatic or semi-automatic
Semi-automatic machines are cheapest and use less water, but you move clothes from the wash tub to the spin tub yourself and need to be around. Fully automatic machines do everything after you press start. If you have a regular water supply and want to save time, a fully automatic machine is worth the extra money.
Top load or front load
Top-load machines are easier on your back, wash faster and let you add clothes mid-cycle. Front-load machines usually clean better, are gentler on clothes, use less water and spin faster, so clothes dry quicker – handy in the monsoon. They cost more, take longer per cycle and need a stable floor.
If you have hard water, front loaders with a built-in heater can wash at higher temperatures, which helps with stubborn stains and with detergent dissolving properly.
Capacity: kilos for your family
The kilogram rating is the maximum dry weight of clothes per wash. Roughly: 6–7 kg for 2–3 people, 7–8 kg for 4–5 people, and 8 kg or more for larger families or if you wash bedsheets and blankets at home often. A slightly bigger drum also helps clothes move freely, which cleans better.
Spin speed, motor and water
Higher spin speed (rpm) removes more water. Around 700–800 rpm is typical for top loaders and 1,000–1,400 rpm for front loaders. Inverter or BLDC motors are quieter and usually come with a long motor warranty. Check the minimum water pressure the machine needs if you rely on an overhead tank, and look for a "tub clean" programme to keep the drum fresh.
Before you order
Measure the space, including the door opening of a front loader and the lid height of a top loader under a counter or shelf. Ask whether installation and the inlet pipe are included, and keep the warranty card with the invoice. Reviews that mention noise, vibration on the spin cycle and service response in your city are more useful than star counts alone.
Quick checklist
- Fully automatic if your water supply is regular
- Front load for better wash and faster drying; top load for convenience
- Capacity by family size (7–8 kg suits most families of four)
- Inverter/BLDC motor with a long motor warranty
- Measure the space and check installation is included
